Proven skills, and our willingness to accept the challenge of 'difficult to do' projects is illustrated this month...

An innovative mobile work platform - designed by Kane - is providing safe and efficient access for replacement of copper cladding to the Bribane Town Hall dome (Robert Ridell and Partners - heritage architects). The works are part of a major programme to refurbish the Town Hall.

Our previous experience with specialist copper roofing including the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, State Library NSW, and ANZ World Headquarters - Melbourne, was a major factor in the Brisbane City Council's decision to appoint KANE.

Constructed in the 1930's with steel truss framing, timber lining and clad with copper, the dome is being progressively stripped, repaired and re-clad by Kane. New copper material is being installed using traditional soft metal roofing techniques. Suspended aluminium platforms provide uninterrupted access to 2 segments of

the dome surface - allowing removal of the interlocked copper trays - which conventional scaffold could not achieve. Alexei's concept design for the access system was engineered to comply with Australian standards by WP Brown Structural Engineers, Brisbane.

With replacement of 2016 custom-made trays - including 14 tonnes of new copper (approx 1950m2) - the works will take 12 months and are currently one-quarter complete and on programme.

For once we can't be blamed for the gruesome sounds and questionable odours on-site.

Donn Veale recently completed an extension to the Animal Autopsy labs at the Menangle facility for NSW Department of Agriculture (Havenhand & Mather Architects, Wallis & Spratt - services) providing PC3 compliant 'sealed' laboratory conditions (negative pressure, HEPA filters). The works were completed on the 'other side' of a sealed hoarding to the existing autopsy lab - which remained in operation throughout.

A detailed site safety plan with particular detail on preventing contamination of materials and equipment ensured the safety of all workers on the site.

You will be pleased to know that Donn escaped alive - and was last seen in the Campbelltown area!

KANE's successful track record in heritage works is being extended with the conservation of this former publican's house and stable buildings dating from the 1830's. The detailed scope of works has been prepared and documented by Otto Cserhalmi & Partners.

Skills and techniques true to the period are being kept alive on the site, including stone repair and re-pointing with shell-grit lime mortar, marbling paint finishes and detailed carpentry.

Kane carpenters and tradesmen have devoted time to training our apprentice on-site, while enjoying the detailed work. The project will be completed in the next few weeks.

Situated on the site of the former navy base, the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust offices at Chowder Bay enjoy a fantastic vista which takes in Watson's Bay, and Clifton Gardens.

Passing ferries and shipping provided an interesting backdrop to our works converting an existing workshop and garage into new administration, library and conference facilities for the Trust.

Responding to a detailed brief, the project has been designed and constructed by KANE with Morrison Design Partnership, Architects. Shane Harders' detailed work in resolving coordination issues including the spatial requirements of mechanical services and disabled access, have resulted in KANE quality outcomes for the Trust.
